This sermon written and delivered by Tim Basselin

Maybe you’ve heard this story before – God providing, and all of us being surprised by God’s provision. A small boy with 2 fish and 5 loaves and a hungry crowd of 5 or maybe 10 thousand. A hungry crowd. The demand was so high, and the supply so low. And yet this crowd ate its fill and still had 12 baskets of food leftover. 2 fish and 5 loaves, except God provides.

Maybe you’ve heard this story before. A friend with a deep faith running out of money and a check shows up in the mail for precisely what they needed to pay rent or buy food. And we are grateful. Maybe you’ve heard this story. God sends a drought on the land and Elijah gets thirsty and God says “Get up and go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman there, a widow, to sustain you.” And she has only enough flour and oil to make one cake for her and her son before they die. But God provides and she makes cake after cake after cake. And then the woman’s son becomes ill and dies. And Elijah lays prostrate on him and God provides. Even life, God provides.

Maybe you’ve heard this story. Maybe you’ve gone without a job for 6 months or 2 years, or couldn’t afford groceries one week. And yet, you are here, because God provided.

Maybe you’ve heard this story- the one that starts “in the beginning …” where the Spirit hovers over the surface of the waters, where the earth is formless and empty. And God … provides, no. No, God creates.

Join us Sunday as we encounter a God who is not bound by supply and demand, a God who cannot lack, and so loves us abundantly.
